Ricardian Tour, June 2008

June 24, 2008

Fotheringhay Church is the burial place of Richard's parents, Richard duke of York and Cicely Neville. The Richard III Society provided in 1975 a stained glass window with the arms of members of the House of York. The Society gave also needlepoint kneelers and a chasuble embroidered with white roses. The fine pulpit, donated by Edward IV, is carved with the king's, Clarence's and Gloucester's arms: you can see a detail of Richard's white boar. The glass window you can see below it was composed by local archaelogists with fragments of the original windows found in a secret room under the hall.

Outside the church, a white horse strolling in a fence reminded me of White Surrey.

The plate remembering the birth of Richard III and three of his siblings in Fotheringhay Castle

Fotheringhay Castle, where Richard was born on October 2, 1452, was once a flourishing place, that saw the passage, among others, of Henry VIII. After Mary Stuart was beheaded here in 1587, the castle was slowly left to be dismantled by people that used its rocks elsewhere.

Now a plaque remembers Richard's birth and Mary's execution. I was about to fall into the stream to photograph it.

Richard visited Castle Rising in June 1469 with his brother Edward, and his earlier extant letter, pledging for a loan of 100 pounds, was written here. It's a solid brick of a castle, surrounded by a deep motte.

Castle Acre Priory is another monastery completely destroyed by the Reformation. The only surviving building are the Prior's apartments, that were used for other purposes after the place was demolished. The surviving frontal wall, with fine Norman decoration, looks like the paper model of a place used for filming movies.
