| Richard III was once a host of Thomas Burgh in Gainsborough Old Hall in 1483, when the new king toured England after his coronation. This solid manor house is quite different from the castles I usually connect Richard with, but he would have surely appreciated its comforts and the cookery. There is a kitchen as splendid as enormous, equipped with models of food, details about medieval diet and, for example, the instructions to a dairy maid. I had the opportunity to wear a medieval costume and to climb on the side tower to see the tiled roofs. | |||

Then we went to Lincoln Cathedral, where we spotted the Lincoln Imp (very difficult to photograph!). The cathedral contains the tombs of Katharine Swynford, ancestress of Richard III and Anne Neville, and of Bishop John Russel, Richard's Chancellor. The Chapter House (second pic), where several early parliaments were held, is particularly impressive. |
