| In a cloudy but not displeasing day we went to Hadrian's Wall, stopping at Birdoswald Fort, Cawfield Quarry and Chesters Fort. I was deeply impressed by the beauty of the landscape just a few miles away from Scotland, sweeter than Scottish wilderness but dramatic enough to make me wish to take longer walks following the Wall. People walk from one side to the other of Hadrian's Wall, and it would be beautiful to go through the whole footpath as they do. At the entrance of Birdoswald Roman Fort, a panel summarizes the history of the Wall, concluding with a sentence written in italics: The wall remained. Just like the Wall protecting the Seven Kingdoms from the wildlings in George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. click on the images to enlarge. |

Cawfield Quarry This point, where an artificial lake was produced by the massive excavation of a hill, was particularly fascinating. |
