Ricardian Tour, June 2008

June 20, 2008

Finally I was in York. The city still holds the white rose as its symbol.

The Richard III Museum is located in the Monk Bar, that we reached walking on the city walls. The place is appropriately weird, packed as it it with false newspapers covers of Richard's accession to throne, panels about Richard's illegitimate children, the people he spared and those he executed, the castles he lived in, the battles he fought in, Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck, the history of the Society, Richard on stage, disparate facts and anecdotes about Richard, his family, and Henry VII. The visit begins attending Richard's trial, and you can vote for your favourite candidate as killer of the princes in the tower. I voted once for Buckingham and once for Tudor. Everyday a board placed in the gift shop shows the latest result; unfortunately Richard still holds the first place, but in the list features also Lord Voldemort.

A wooden stick is decorated with greeting cards for Richard and Anne's wedding, including:

  • "To Father from your illegitimate children, John of Gloucester and Katherine Plantagenet xxx"
  • "Congratulations - Richard, to whom we shall always be loyal, the Stanley brothers"
  • "Congratulations - Have a drink on me! Your loving brother, Clarence"
  • "Congratulations - to Richard and our lifelong friendship, Henry, Duke of Buckingham"

In the afternoon, I went to the panoramic wheel connected to the National Railway Museum, and I floated 60 metres over York Minster.
